Toledo jumped out to a 14-7 lead but could not contain Central Michigan’s potent offense in a 56-28 loss in Mt. Pleasant Wednesday night.

Even though Toledo came out of the gate strong, it was all downhill after that. In the first and second quarter, Toledo gave away penalties right and left. Admittedly, some of the calls were questionable but giving away three first downs in one drive on penalties, is not how you win a game.

Opelt left the game in the third quarter after reinjuring this shoulder. Via Zach Silka at the Toledo Blade, we learned that after the game, Opelt revealed that he has been playing with a partial tear in his right rotator cuff. Does that mean we should count him out for the next two games (EMU and BGSU) ? No word on that yet.

This game was disappointing in a lot aspects but against the MAC juggernaut that is CMU, many MAC teams have shared the fate of Toledo.

Speaking strictly as a fan, the most disappointing issue to appear from last night’s defeat is the chatter around the web about Beckman, about how he’s failing the team, and should be fired. This type of talk is absolutely absurd. I realize that after a beating, some fans call for the heads of (even) legendary coaches because fans are like that sometimes. But what strikes me as the most unsettling is the lack of support and loyalty and the willingness to lash out at Beckman. Brian Nowicki said it best – “[Beckman] inherited a mess on defense. It’s gonna take some time to fix, and anyone mad at him is not realistic.” All our problems can’t be fixed in one year and anyone who has watched one Toledo game this season knows that Beckman has us on the right path, and given time, he will get the results that we’re all looking for. I know the fanbase is hungry for a good team, some wins, and to get some swagger back – but we have to give Beckman and his staff time to work their magic (and this includes getting their guys in the field and getting those guys experience in real games)

There’s still two games to go, and the chance to even up and finish at .500. We need to concentrate on EMU and BGSU. Go Rockets.
